What is Section 8?

Section 8 is a HUD subsidized program, also referred to as "Voucher", or "HAP" (housing assistance payment). This is the program that enables you to secure your own housing. Click here to see how Section 8 is a partnership between the housing agency (RHA), the tenant, and the owner/landlord (you). Raleigh Housing Authority currently has 3390 regular vouchers, 950 welfare-to-work vouchers and 72 moderate rehabilitation project vouchers. Applications are placed on a waiting list and applicants are selected by date and time of application.  At this time, based on current turnover, we are estimating our waiting list for Section 8 to be approximately 4 - 5 years.
